Alcohol, Tobacco, & Other Drugs at HPW

Our goals include prevention campaigns that provide workshops, outreach tables, campus-wide health campaigns, and substance-free events. Using a harm reduction approach to substance use education, we hope to increase social support and knowledge of the safe utilization of substances in the SF State community to prevent harms associated with substance use.

ATOD Programs:

ATOD Programs:
Late Night Events
provide students with the opportunity to engage and network with others while learning about protective behaviors surrounding substances. Events include, Art Night, Game Night, and Movie Night.

BREATHE educational campaign (Be Responsible, Educated, and Aware about Tobacco, Hookah, and E-cigarettes) is focused on encouraging members of the SF State community to lead a smoke and tobacco-free life by connecting them to resources and support

Harm Reduction and Drugs:

Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas to reduce the negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm Reduction is also a movement for social justice built on a belief in and respect for the rights of people who use drugs (National Harm Reduction Coalition).

The Harm Reduction Guide includes protective behaviors that can be taken to mitigate risks associated with substance use, such as hangovers, injuries, and overdoses and ways of supporting harm reduction through advocacy and policy.

The Harm Reduction Video Series includes short videos with protective behaviors and resources for some of the most commonly used substances by young adults.

Learn the basics of safer alcohol use and the many protective behaviors people can take to avoid a hangover. We will cover standard drink sizes, and how to continue to have fun in safer ways, specifically during the pandemic.

In this workshop we will discuss the effect of alcohol and drugs, safer use practices, and the influence that social media and pop culture have on our perceived misconceptions of substance use.

In this workshop you will learn tips and tricks to reduce cigarette or vaping intake of tobacco, nicotine, or cannabis products. You will also learn of virtual and physical resources on and off campus. This workshop is open to anyone who wishes to know more about resources for themselves or for others.

Need to have a dialogue with your student organization members around safer partying and socializing around substance use? Request Substance Use Student Peer Educators for a discussion around substance use and protective behaviors that can be taken to mitigate harms associated with use.

Is there a specific substance use related topic that you are interested in but don’t see listed? Let us know what you have in mind, and our Health Educator will connect with you to determine how to best work with your needs.
