Sexual Violence Prevention Collaborative

Who We Are

The Sexual Violence Prevention Collaborative (SVPC) is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to increasing the capacity of our campus community to prevent sexual violence. Along with a cohort of 40 higher education institutions, the SVPC is proud to have received strategic support and technical assistance from the NASPA Culture of Respect Collective. As a collaborative, we are dedicated to preventing sexual violence, supporting survivors, and communicating that violence is unacceptable.

SVPC Workgroups

We are committed to transforming culture through deep collaboration to reach our vision of a world where we have the resources and skills to effectively address the root causes of sexual violence. To bring about transformation, we are comprised of collaborative teams who think and act creatively, holistically, and strategically. While each of our workgroups have an intended focus, we work symbiotically to create the impact needed to prevent sexual violence within San Francisco State University and beyond.

Aims to increase our capacity to prevent sexual violence campuswide at program and institutional levels.

Action items for this workgroup include:
guaranteeing all SFSU students are equipped with core skills beyond their mandatory online trainings to prevent sexual violence and harassment at the individual, interpersonal, and group levels upon graduation; developing a men against violence initiative; establishing an active bystander campus culture; increasing awareness and prevention programs that center the experiences of marginalized communities; and equipping key campus stakeholders the skills to prevent sexual violence in their unique contexts.

Aims to create concrete opportunities for our broader campus community to help advance sexual violence prevention.

Action items for this workgroup include:
advocating for sexual violence prevention to be a key campus initiative in the University’s strategic plan; expanding outreach and visibility activities that inform and connect the SFSU community to the SVPC’s work; making sexual violence prevention, support, and policy information easily accessible; and developing strong connections between the SVPC, Associated Students, Campus Climate Committee, and other relevant campus networks that can elevate prevention.

Aims to enhance the ways we assess the incidence, prevalence, and impact of sexual violence on campus to sharpen our ability to prevent sexual violence.

Action items for this workgroup include:
improving existing surveys to better assess for impact on marginalized survivors; developing social media campaigns and communications to keep the campus informed of our progress of preventing sexual violence; and using data strategically to improve practices, strengthen policies, guide development of programs, and advocate for more resources to prevent sexual violence more effectively.

Aims to establish the trauma-informed approach as a core practice of the University.

Action items for this group include:
facilitating and expanding the Trauma Informed Professors & Staff (TIPS) training; developing toolkits for departments (academic and non-academic) to evaluate their policies through a trauma-informed lens; and ensuring University policies and procedures reflect trauma-informed practices and principles at every level.

What to expect

The SVPC workgroups function across silos to prevent sexual violence by:

  • Working collaboratively across departments, roles, workgroups, and community to create change in our university and beyond

  • Prioritizing meeting every other second Thursday of the month from 10am-11:30am to accomplish our goal (a total of 6 all-members meetings per year)

  • Learning and developing skills to better prevent and respond to sexual violence

  • Challenging and changing existing practices, procedures, and structures to better align with best practices, emerging evidence, transformative theories, and social justice principles to prevent and respond to sexual violence
  • Creating change from the inside-out, from the bottom-up

*We strive to center the experience of survivors, especially of those from historically minoritized  BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities to inform our collective work. Please check out and attend an information session to learn more.

No upcoming info sessions at this time, please visit this page again soon.
